So I’ve been a bit quiet on the blogging front so far this year. After a nice leisurely start to the year life has suddenly ramped up to full speed and I just can’t seem to keep up! Is anyone else feeling like that?
I’ve been desperately seeking ways to ‘work smarter not harder’ and to either get the same amount done in less time or get more done in the same time. This desire to seek balance is not new but has been exacerbated now that I’m pregnant and just not physically able to as much as I want to or used to.
So each week (if I can manage it), I’m going to trial one idea / solution / gadget / life hack aimed at using my time more efficiently, being more productive or just making my life easier.
Smarter not harder #1 – Meal Planning
The last few weeks I’ve been experimenting with meal planning. For a while there we were using My Food Bag (which is awesome, and they’re not even paying me to say that!) and it was great to not have to think about ‘what are we having for dinner tonight’, the hard part (the planning) was all sorted for you. However given that I’ve had a few food aversions and both my husband and daughter can be a bit picky around new foods (particularly vegetables) I was finding that too much was going to waste for my liking.
So I’ve been experimenting with meal planning. In an effort to make my life easier, rather than having it every week and then going shopping, I have done a fortnightly meal plan which I plan to use for several fortnights in a row. It has a good bit of flexibility in it so that (hopefully) it wont seem like we’re eating the same thing every fortnight and I’ve kept them really simple so that it’s not a long or arduous task to cook dinner after having been at work all day (which is important with a starving toddler at my feet demanding snacks), and also means it’s easy for hubby to step in and do it as well.
So far so good. We’re into week 2 and it all seems to be doing well. I guess next week (wk3) will be the test as it will be the first ‘repeat’ week. My hope is that I’ll be able to get away with only having to do meal plans every 6 weeks or so (even monthly would be great).
If you know of any good ideas / solutions / gadgets / life hacks that you think I should trial, I’d LOVE to hear them.
